    How to beat 4-5-1 V-Style

    Hi everyone,

My next Cup opponent plays 4-5-1 V-Style, which looks like this:

    DL--DC--DC--DR
    ------DMC------
    ----MC--MC----
    AML--------AMR
    -------ST-------

His team's overall rating is equal to mine. He has very strong DMC and DCs, and his AMR is 6*. Other than that, his MCs are not as good as mine, and his DL and DR are also not very good (only 3*). I got a 2-2 draw at home in the 1st leg using 3-2-2-2-1 butterfly, mixed passing and focus on the flanks.

    -------ST--------
    AML----------AMR
    -----MC--MC-----
    DML----------DMR
    ---DC--DC--DC---

I do not have real DML and DMR, and used DL and DR for those positions in my last match against him. Since I got 2-2 draw at home, I really need to win at the 2nd leg away match. Is there any other formation for countering 4-5-1 V-Style besides 3-2-2-2-1 butterfly? Thanks.

4-5-1 V-style is one of the most versatile formations. It can easily become defensive or offensive with the change of a few arrows. A great jack of all trades, but it's lack of defensive wingers can be exploited.

When playing against 4-5-1 V, you need to protect your flanks and attack the opponent's. Forget about attacking the middle, it's that simple. Keep in mind that 4-5-1 V-style is most often played with counter-attacking orders, so you don't want to overdo your attacks. Use normal or defensive mentality and press your own half.

As always, when playing against a midfield formation, you need to have at least as many midfielders as the opponent.

    4-3-2-1

This is 4-5-1 V-style's brother. It takes advantage of not using a DMC who won't be blocking an nonexistent AMC and vice verse. This translates into a more powerful midfield to feed passes to the forward players.

    --------------ST-------------
    AML-------------------AMR
    ------MC----MC----MC----
    ------------------------------
    DL(UP)--DC--DC---DR(UP)

    Motivated 4-5-1 flat.

While an unmotivated 4-5-1 flat would probably succumb to a 4-5-1 V-style, you can take advantage of that and make the opponent underestimate you. He'll probably realize that his flanks are under constant attack after a few goals.

    ----------------ST------------------
    -------------------------------------
    ML(UP)--MC--MC--MC--MR(UP)
    -------------------------------------
    DL(UP)-----DC---DC-----DR(UP)

Thank you influenze. What is the advantage of using 4-3-2(AMR-AML)-1 in comparison with 3-2-2-2-1 butterfly? I read another thread on the forum that 3-2-2-2-1 butterfly works well against 4-5-1 V-Style, which in my turn is not very good.

I use the butterfly to counter 4-5-1 V but you dont have dml/dmr and you was searching for another counter formation, i give you 2.
4-3-2-1 works, see picture above from Michael, 10 shots on target versus 2, he's a bit unlucky by winning with only 2-1
By the way, the 2 counter formations i have given to you where on the thread from Adel, many people will know like dv8r

Just tried the defensive 4-3-2-1 in Cup against a 4-5-1 V-Style opponent (both quality 26,7) which resulted in equal ball possession (51:49), more shots on my side (14:8), less shots on goal (4:6 which might have to do with the individual players) and a final result of 0:2.

Gonna go for the 3-2-2-2-1 butterfly in the second match (at home)...

Hi influenze, thank you very much for your advice.

About the thread from Adel, is it this thread http://forum.topeleven.com/formation...-see-here.html ? Unfortunately, this thread's content was removed before I join in the forum. Does anyone have a backup copy of that thread, it would be great for new comers like me.

No, it was another thread (how to win against any formation) with many counter formations and the orders but it is deleted.
