Could this be caused by the fact I had 7 players contracts I didn't renew would have taken my squad down maybe to below a squad minimum. Could that be the problem?

I had 1 player player who was supposed to retire my one could be sacked and cost nothing. Yours I would tthink should be the same. Give it a check.

Of course its an issue. I chose not to renew 7 players contracts as they are down to 3/4 stars no use for playing at Level 41 and champions league. Now these are stuck in my squad when they should...

I have exactly the same issue and completely agree with everything you say. This needs to be sorted out.
