I am very surprised to find out that I can only add my real life friends if I have a facebook account.

Could there not be the chance to search for other leagues and teams in order to add them?

you can send friend request to any manager you can see in the competitions (in the Cup for example), or from transfer market.
You can send to their supporters too.
Also here in the forum there is a section about members who are searching for friends (for the game).
