History

Buffs FC was formed on 8th April 2014 and features the managerial debut of Buffs Mad.
(Buffs Mad's original name is unclear but it is rumoured he changed it by Deed Poll to impress the Board.)

Formation

The team uses 4-5-1 V as its goto formation although the players are being coached to cover a variety of positions and offer flexibility.

Squad roles are key to pre-match and in-game tweaking to almost any formation with a minimum of fuss (or subs).

In Season 3 Buffs Mad has been exploring further flexibility, often starting in 4-1-4-1 with the option of slipping seamlessly into V style and also looking at 3-5-2 flat more often. Season 4 has seen more experimentation with 3 man defence formations with 3-5-2V and its one srtiker variant 3-1-3N-2W-1 looking promising.

Feeder teams have constantly experimenting with various defensive counter-attacking forms - these are looking like powerful options against those 'always attacking mentality' formations, regularly producing 'unexpected' results with a squads of decent defensive quality players..

The Season 14 Squad starting Squad has been bolstered to 15 by a single Academy recruit.

The Scouting Network is currently working hard to secure 5 Youngsters: 2DCs, 2 Wingers and a Striker. Additionally a minimum of 2 further One Season Wonders are sought for the central midfield roles before any existing player can be allowed to depart.

Season Plan

While ordinarly Buffs FC's priorities are Promotion, Knockout Stages of CL and Cup the Season 14 target is the Treble.

A small Q-manipulation strategy is in place with the continuing decline of the 3 Stooges - its hoped that if the Buffs can achieve a Level 16 Cup for the 3rd Season in succession that this Season represents the start of a Treble run. Failing that it should at least produce a more consistent showing in the Cup.

Facilities & Infrastructure

Current policy is to build an upgrade stadium for official opening on the first day of the new season.

The Upgrading of Abbey Park to a Pro Arena is complete and refurbishment to a World Arena has already begun.

OMA representatives - the Franchise currently has no team playing in OMA Masters League.

Day 1 was merely 2 wins in the cup against an abandoned team. Day 2 was more eventful.

First up was a league match. Looked to be tight affair with opponent 3pts ave Q higher, playing 4-1-2-1-2 narrow diamond, so I set up a bit 'safe' opting for a 4-5-1V in defensive mentality (but still with 2 wingers pushing on). Had most of the possession but he had most of the threat. Very tense. Both defenses stood up to the challenge manfully until my lone striker split though the defense in the 78th minute, shimmied round the goalkeeper and then - as this caring/sharing guy usually does - passed for an MC to score.

Second up was my first venture into the CL. Buffs FC looked to be heavy favourite on paper against a flat 3-4-3 2star side. I got a bit lazy and just switched to offensive mentality leaving formation as is. A pretty unexciting 3-0 resulted. That said, my AMR/AMC on the right was inspired: coming in for a header from a freekick on the left, a 'mazey-dribble' solo effort with a chip over the keeper to finish and a shot from distance in off the bar. A hat-trick hero - 7 goals in 4 games for him so far this season. (He'll probably break his leg tomorrow.)

Cup and league tomorrow in the afternoon so I'll need to watch some videos for extra rests some time. ;)

We had a little 'blip' today. 2x 1-1 draws at home in cup and away in league - 38 shots, 2 goals.....someone check the size of those goalposts please. ;)

Tomorrow will be better. :D

First up today saw a nice 2-0 victory away in CL - 2 early goals then hung on. The target's on our (collective) back now.

The return to league action produced a 5-1 win at home. 3 first half goals and then 2 more in the last 6 minutes when the opposition started chasing the game. Not sure if we'll hold onto 2nd place with 2 results still to come in.

Tough day to come tomorrow with an away game against the league leader (and the 1st friend I added) then an away tie in the cup where we need to turn around that 1-1 home draw. :D

Following those early games, and the sale of 2 squad players overnight, we took a delve in the transfer market, securing a 5* AML/ML Hot Prospect as well as 'rolling the dice' and taking in a 4* 18yo MC from the Youths for 12 tokens.

So budget gone again. Need to look out some price tags for those further down the pecking order. ;)

With both teams evenly matched this game was going to be a Management clash. The home team stole a march on the visiting Buffs with a clever tactical switch in the last minute pre-match pushing forward 2 AMs. Buffs tried to get a DMC on as soon as possible but the referee ignored their pleas until 6 mins in - by which time they were one behind. A tense even match thereafter with chances at either end but no more goals. Following half-time home team again proved they were faster out the blocks with another early goal. Buffs ramped up the pressure looking for some hope to cling to but failed to convert chances immediately - a header past the post and a ball blazed over the bar ("What a miss!"). However, the home team were getting nervous and pulled their AML back but were unable to keep the plucky Buffs out. 2-1! and light at the end of the tunnel. Buffs took off their DMC and pushed on another striker. They tried valiantly to rescue a draw for the travelling fans but to no avail with the home side parking the bus and bring on further defensive cover. In the end the home side deserved the win with greater tactical nous.

Defeated and a 5 point gap opened up but all is not lost. Just like that rubber ball....we'll bounce back. :D

We start this report on Day 7 with a catch up on yesterday evening's Cup game. With Buffs having been held to a 1-1 draw at home they had to score. From the off the Buffs went hard and fast but were leaving themselves open. End to end stuff but nothing convincing in front of goal for either side. Several warnings and a yellow had already been flashed by the ref when Buffs' Lintang Paraibabo was scythed down on the far touch line. The stretcher was immediately on. Shuffle the deck.

The second half began like the first ended, fast and furious, full of guts n graft but very little guile. (It was like Rambo but without the well crafted dialogue:p.) It seemed like a stalemate but Buffs kept stepping up the pressure with a header past the post and a deflection off the right back. The hosts threw themselves in front of everything and continued to threaten on the break. Buffs Mad signalled kamikaze mode for the last 10 mins. The Buffs threw everything at them, including the kitchen sink - but even that hit the bar.:confused:

And to sum up the day, on 89 minutes > deflection > clearance > breakaway > goal! 1-0 to the home side and it was game over, cup finished and time for the inquest to start.

But back to the league and with Buffs in 3rd after defeat to the leaders they really needed a tonic. The medical team had worked wonders on Paraibabo and it paid off - 2 goals and 1 assist was the perfect antidote to last nights malaise. Buffs ran out 4-0 winners but still shot-shy Jordan Gibson couldn't get in on the goals. In a remarkable turn of events however the top 2 teams shared a 4-4 gut wringing encounter. Buffs remain in 3rd but with just 3pts between the teams. In quality terms, a mere 1.5 ave Q separates 5 of the top 6 teams so this league will be fought not only out on the pitch and in the dug-out but also in the boardrooms. The Scouts will be busy (and by the looks of some of the squads they already have been).

No let up for the Buffs tho - CL action beckoned. Buffs came out the traps fast with a goal in 3 mins for Paraibabo but were rocked on their heels when DMC, Patrick Pittracher was red carded for a professional foul in the box and the penalty was slotted home. One minute there's a light at the end of the tunnel, the next there is the horn of a train. Buffs Mad, fuelled by a growing sense of injustice signalled the charge. Did it work? 8 goals later we had our answer with a 9-1 triumph. Even Gibson managed to score....just once tho. :p So 5 pts clear and +13 gd, looking good.

Only one game tomorrow as Buffs take on the 3rd placed team. They just keep coming.

Training: Paraibabo achieved his 5th star after an excellent training session last night as did Jordan "Oh, you mean between the posts" Gibson. Szabo will gain his fifth this evening.)

Pending: A proposal has been put to the Board regarding a Hot Prospect MC, identified by the Scouting team.

Gonna miss my game this evening but with the league leaders being thumped 4-1 at home by 6th it should be 'musical chairs' again. 3 pts between top 5 with 2 games to play today: 4th v Buffs (3rd) & Bottom v 2nd.

I'll just need to set up and hope for the best.

EDIT: as 2nd place are held to a draw at the bottom side the Buffs take advantage to sneak top on goal difference (+10vs+5) with a 2-0 away win. A solo effort on 19 mins by Kalkoul (AML) and Morrison (MC) converting a chance in 84mins (assist by Savage) sealed the win.

Training News: Buffs' DC/DR Sandor Urban Szabo achieves a 5* rating in training tonight.

League Match 7

On the Team bus Buffs Mad tried to rally the team. In view of the unexpected slips by nearest rivals he challenged his team to apply the pressure and "let's see if they can handle it!".

Buffs matched up to the opposition in a 4-4-2 but looking to go hard for the early goal. Buffs Mad had visibly delivered on his promise to Gibson to provide striker support to see if he could finally deliver goals. After 30 mins of stalemate a tactical switch was made to 4-2-2W-2. In a 13 min spell either side of the break Buffs were 4 up and cruising. (Still no goals for Gibson tho with his 'inferior' strike partner helping himself to a brace).

Two goals late on for the home side gave them momentum going into the final 8 mins. Even a Buffs reply in 84 mins to make it 5-2 couldn't completely squash the nerves and murmurs in the crowd as they conceded again almost immediately. A 5-3 win and with news filtering through that one of the challengers had stumbled to a draw it was a decent days work. But given the events of the last 15 mins this must become a lesson learned. Play to the final whistle Buffs!

Buffs FC rack up their 4th straight win in the CL scoring 4 for no reply against 'I think our Manager fell down a well cos we haven't seen him for ages' FC. The absence of Jordan Gibson, Striker had tongues wagging throughout the ground. Rumour has it he was 'papped' in a lap-dancing bar the evening before the match. Further rumours say he failed to score there either.

Has Gibson played his last game for the Buffs? Ominously, Paul MacDonald, Striker promoted from the reserves walked away with the MoM Champagne.

The Buffs today secured the signature of 5* Welsh Wizard Mattie Butler for an undisclosed fee. Buffs Mad said "Mattie brings experience and skill, determination & pace and a singing vioce that will add quality to the post-match bath." When asked about Jordan Gibson and questioned whether this move was short-termism at best and knee-jerk panic at worst Buffs Mad appeared to indicate that they were still fighting on two fronts....by raising that number of fingers and walking off.

Buffs today play host to the 3rd place team who have yet to lose a league match.

Feeder Club news just in: Celtic Rangers negotiated the return leg of their Cup Qualifying tie with a 1-1 away draw, progressing 5-2 on aggregate, with star man Alan Higgins scoring today's leveller.

Today saw the visit of undefeated 3rd place team. Visitors took the lead early on slicing through the buffs defence like a hot knife through butter. The warning was heeded with Buffs tightening up significantly (which ultimately would see Centre Back, Savage would collect MoM). Buffs remained down at half time but at least the defence was composed. Buffs would have to chase the game and chase it they did, forcing an equaliser in 55 mins with Paraibabo heading home a Savage (pun intended) corner. Buffs pressed and pressed but the visitors held on - and even threatened from a breakaway in the dying minutes - so all square at the end.

That's the Buffs played each of the other top 6 teams - with a visit to 7th place up next - while still clinging on to top spot by virtue of a superior goal difference.

Feeder Club News: No problems again for Celtic Rangers with a routine 3-0 win at home. Striker Daniel Morris now has 16 goals in all competitions and Alan Higgins, Centre Back 16 assists.

With 3 MCs out through injury or suspension I'm having to dip into the transfer market again. I'll probably get an old one...short on cash. :p

O.....M......G. Buffs Mad bids on a striker then the ageing buffoon decides to 'rest his eyes for 2 mins', falls asleep and loses out. So with an impending match and only 1 fit MC he jumps into action <cue Superman theme>.....................and goes and buys a DMC!:confused:

So medical staff work overtime to get an MC fit for today's match. (Down to last kit now.) Nurse also seeks Board Approval to increase Buffs Mad's medication without further consultation. Approval given.

Buffs FC travelled to France today to meet a side bouyant after recent run of victories.

This French side were in no mood to allow Buffs to take root at the top. If evidence was needed then it came staight at the start as Mattie Butler broke clear and was roundly up-ended in 3 mins. We can only assume the ref was unsighted - although how his guide dog missed it is a mystery? No foul, no card, no lecture just a stretcher and, as became clear post-match, a 4-game absence (ACL tear) . Gibson came off the bench intent on atoning for his recent form and in 20 mins a fine solo effort saw him find the selfish streak he had lacked, rounding the keeper for the opener. Poison spilled from the stands as the Buffs saw out the half.

As the visitors emerged for the second half the away fans gave voice but that was immediately quelled in this cauldron of a stadium. Couple of early forays into Buffs territory by the home side were confidently dealt with by the Buffs defence. You could feel the confidence build as Buffs gave up territory but contained the attacking side. The Buffs would see it out, wouldn't they? Alas football is a cruel mistress. Buffs Keeper Campbell leaped with grace and intent to intercept a swinging corner, clutched the ball, landed and went down writhing in agony. Buffs Mad looked anxiously at his keeper - who drew a finger across his throat. The stretcher was on and Erol Kahya was pitched in on 68 mins. Time for Buffs to settle? Think again - a speculative 30 metre shot for the French rocketed home within a minute. The home side clearly had the Buffs rattled and their tackling remained fierce and, according to the referee at least, fair. That was until a yellow was flashed in 74 mins for a knee in the back. Free kick to the Buffs and as Savage stepped up, he swung and it curled to the far corner. It looked a certaint goal. But the home keeper thought different and valiantly managed to tip it over. Buffs set about trying to see the match out - a point from here would be a decent result. But the lack of depth in the squad that saw young Kahya put on was again cruelly exposed as he was again beaten from distance by a screamer on 86 mins. The home side tried to play keep-ball and although a late flurry of 3 corners seemed to offer Buffs some hope it all came to nought. For Buffs it was time to return home, lick those wounds (and there are many) and ready themselves to come again.

Both 2nd and 3rd returned wins today to leapfrog Buffs FC.

Yo-yo Buffs FC continue to take the crowd on a roller coaster ride.

Today's league visitors were 10th placed Indonesian side who had suffered a dip in form lately. The away team had set up aggressively looking to take the game to the Buffs. And they achieved that in an opening spell which saw pressure exerted in the home end. Two corners then a free-kick in quick succession. Buffs packed the wall but the long run up was a diversion as Jailiashvili neatly flicked the dead ball to Toba and the marauding AMC curled it in at the back post. Would Buffs' temperament hold up to the pressure? The midfield was like no-mans land with the ball constantly popping over or around Buffs' centres. Clearly the frustration got the better of Buffs' Nicolson when he needlessly caught the heels of the away team's winger as he cut inside and saw yellow. Strangely that seemed to cause the home side to take stock and they visibly settled: no longer chasing but opting to put their foot on the ball and exert control. The equaliser came in 17 mins with Paraibabo coming inside, stooping and diving to head home Kalkoul's in-swinging cross. Buffs stroked the ball around and appeared relaxed on the pitch. The second came just before half-time with the advanced Nicolson picking up on a defensive mistake - a short pass back - and he rounded the keeper to prod home.

Half-time came and although the the home team led, Buffs Mad paced up and down huddling with his staff, notebooks twitching. The visiting manager meanwhile seemed relaxed. Did he have a masterplan or was this the pressure of expectatation being played out in front of our eyes? As the second half got underway the Buffs engine room purred into action - control was the watchword. A flurry of goals came with Kalkoul volleying home a Savage corner in 56; Butler splitting the defence and chipping the keeper on 64 mins; and this time Paraibabo converting another pinpoint corner from Savage. The visitors had not been devoid of threat - the composure of Buffs' defence just made it seem that way.

A 5-1 win at home seems comforting enough but the nervousness of the pitch was palpable and celebrations seemed muted.

In a after match comment Buffs Mad said "I'm not quite sure what game these league reporters were watching but clearly from their ratings they don't know what a commanding midfield display looks like."

Now Round 10 is completed - leader lost so Buffs move up to 2nd on gd, 2 pts behind leader who managed to secure a 1-0 win and keep his unbeaten run going.

I've got a run of 4 of my easier games next so........plenty of opportunities for Buffs to drop points.

Referral Team News: Celtic Rangers secure a 4-1 win away in the 1st leg of the cup. They also top the league with 10-0-0 record.

Buffs FC put on a dominant display in the final CL Group match at home in a 4-0 win - Buffs peppered the visitors goal 20 times. But not even the rarity of a goal from right back Zdenek Racko, could soften the blow of the injury to Dean Savage which looks set to keep him out of action for 4 days.

With little rest time, next up for the Buffs was an away trip that on paper should not be problematic. Buffs hit 6 without reply to keep their push for the title on track: Nicolson bagged 2 and an assist (Butler), Racko proved that lightning can strike twice, Paraibabo claimed his 15th goal in 12 matches and new midfielder Alconero struck his 2nd in 3 matches since his arrival.

A 2-1 win for the leaders maintains the 2 pt gap at the top with Buffs in 2nd by virtue of their impressive and increasing goal difference (+21). And with Buffs rival matching up to today's 6 goal losers the table is not expected to change drastically anytime soon.

Central Defensive Partnership
Dean Savage and Danny Shaw are the central defensive gatekeepers and mention of one naturally leads to the other. They are the Ying and Yang of Buffs defence - a contrast of style, age and outlook which combine to give balance.


Danny Shaw is the essence of the Buffs. Cut him and he bleeds blue n white. This 22 yo is a hometown boy who always dreamed of playing for the Buffs. While displaying the swagger and bravado of a glory-hunter there is one key component that makes this boy different from the usual club hopping, ferrari driving, investment junkie star-in-the-making. He wants it all.....while wearing the Buffs' colours.


Shaw plays from instinct. His decisions have an impact - sometimes negative but that's the deal. He plays on the right of centre and the only purpose his left foot serves is to allow him to stand to swing his right. He roams, he pushes, he presses, (he loses concentration)....he wants the ball. He's hungry and there's more to come from Shaw.


Dean Savage has been the journeyman footballer. He's been there, seen it done it. At 30 yo he's never really stood out but he has always stepped up. He's comfortable with both feet and is the last line - a consistent, reliable and solid defender. When Buffs first looked at Savage they were looking for a left back, a role he was accustomed to play, albeit in a defensive set up. But it was his poise and calm and potential pairing with Shaw in the centre that clinched the deal.


An early spell at left back this season in the Cup campaign (forced by injuries) brought a slump in form (and cup exit early doors). Buffs Mad has recognised that a left back in Buffs' offensive set up needed legs and the engine to get up and down and that this had left Savage exposed. Interestingly, this pipe and slippers approach, has seen Savage thrust into the limelight anew. This concentration on technique, consistentency and quality as opposed to lung bursting firness has seen Dean add to his armoury a reputation as an accomplished Corner Specialist. Its this that catches the eye of the league statisticians, racking up high numbers of assists - as well as his numerous 'last man' tackles of course.


When asked recently about his partnership with Shaw he said "Putting everything else aside, my job is simple - I am here to let Danny be Danny."

I've also started renaming my squad after some favourite Scottish National Team players. I can't go too far back but limiting it to players I have seen still gives me a decent time period. XD But it'll take a while as defensive positions are giving me a problem. But so far for first team I have

GK Andy Goram (David Harvey or Jim Leighton might've been more solid but Goram was more instinctive)
MCs Graeme Souness and Billy Bremner
Wingers Jimmy Johnstone and Jim Baxter - a special place will be reserved on the bench for Davie Cooper
Strikers Dennis Law and Kenny Dalglish

DCs - options include ignoring individuals and pairing Willie Miller and Alec McLeish but there's Billy McNeil, John Greig, Alan Hansen, Richard Gough, Gordon McQueen....and I'll probably go the individuals route;
LB Tommy Gemmel looks most likely
RB can't see past Danny McGrain
DMC bit of a non-role; Hansen and McNeill could probably have played it defensively, Souness could've played it as a deep midfielder....this'll be a problematic one.

League: Buffs FC crash to a 3-0 defeat at home in the league to drift further off the pace.

After 45 mins of nothingness the second half seemed to be sliding into stalemate too. Buffs Mad could not contemplate a home draw so looked to change things around with Centre Back McNeill to come off and striker Law to come on in a change to 3-5-2. But play continued before any change could be made and the visitors took the lead from a corner in 68 mins. Finally the ref allowed Law on, just in time for the opposition to make it 2-0 with a speculative shot, from what seemed like the next town, finding the net. 15 mins to pull back a 2 goal deficit? Well, that soon became 11 mins to pull back a 3 goal deficit with 10 men, when Mackay, faced with a breakaway, lunged into the tackle. He got the ball, then the player, and half the turf and almost the referee too. The last 10 minutes passed in slow motion, every mistake, every missed pass, every goal attempt that slipped away was another dagger to the heart of the Buffs.

5 pts off the leaders now who remain undefeated. But for the Buffs there is something more important than the title to claim....there's their dignity!

£5.80 pounds and you'll get 65 tokens. That would make you win your league. Your choise ^^ You score most goals of all teams. Fix 2-3 good defensive players and 1-2 good point players. And you win.

I have tokens and if I wanted to I could buy 22 Scouts or power-train 22 Youngsters - but I don't want to.

While I would like to win the league, and I am slightly ahead of other 2 on quality to give it a chance......this game is a bit of fun, a distraction. Winning each game easily without the need to watch would not provide that. And when I make up a report after looking at the stats, I'd rather be able to put a bit of tension or humour in it than just list goals 1 - 9.

I don't buy finished scouts, and I don't power train players (I dont even know what power train is) I train my players once per day + two games. That's what it takes. But I like your style :) You have the funniest match-reports!

The slight stutter in form on the pitch has not swayed the Board from plotting a firm course into Season 3 and pressing ahead with infrastructure development.

Now that the restaurant is fully equipped, with Balsamic Vinegar for the chips and umbrellas for the Irn Bru, stadium expansion has begun.

Buffs FC started the second leg of the Champions League knockout round at home with the shadow of recent poor results hanging over them. Things did not start well with the visitors pummeling the Buffs end with chance after chance from their amazing 30% possession. In that first 15 mins McNeill made 3 dast ditch tackles, McGrain cleared the lines twice and even Dalglish was back providing a clearing header from a corner. The stats might tell a different story but it had been one way traffic. Things settled down a bit for the Buffs and the focus shifted up the other end but a goal eluded the Buffs. Double corners, free kicks and crosses peppered the visitors goal and Baxter blasted over from short range, but no goal came.

As the half drew to a close the visitors broke upfield and only the fast reactions of 'The Goalie' denied the visitors. As the seconds ticked down a long clearance by McGrain found Dalglish, who held it up and spun his marker. But a last ditch tackle drove the ball out for a corner. Just time enough for McNeill to swing over the ball onto the head of Dalglish who buried it. The cheers had hardly even started when the half-time whistle blew.

Two chances in quick succession for the visitors were blocked as the Buffs defence stood firm. The game then got bogged down in the middle with through balls from both sides cleared by either defence. Something special was needed - someone called Baxter. Retreating deep, Baxter picked up a loose ball and ran with it. He ran and ran for what seemed like an eternity and, as the defence tried to marshal him outside, he cut in and unleashed a shot that struck the defender. But.......it popped up, he pulled it down and unleashed a pile-driver that almost burst the top corner of the net. Buffs had a cushion! Alas! there was no time to think ahead. At the restart Buffs seemed to go to sleep - perhaps thinking 2-0 was enough. A shot from range spun off Gemmel for a corner. As the cross came in the attacker stooped and delivered a glancing header to the back post and it trickled in off. 2-1. Then piledriver from the visitors sent shivers around the ground. Not again! But the shot clipped the bar.

Buffs picked up the pace again and a threaded cross field pass from Gemmel was driven by Baxter but it whistled past the post. Johnstone curled from range but the defence only half cleared it. The miscued attempt spun off a defender and dropped to Baxter - he skipped past one, beat another and as the keeper rushed out he slipped it neatly towards Dalglish and the least defender. But the onrushing McNeill got there first just as he looked to shoot the defender slid in. But McNeil chipped it over and Dalglish lept and volleyed it home.

3-1 and 5 mins left on the clock. We've seen Buffs contrive to throw away a few leads lately but surely they would see this out. And they did, a drive from Johnstone was tipped over, a header from Souness slipped wide and a volley from Bremner whistled over. But at least the ball remained down the right end. At last the whistle came.
