3-1-4-2 works 50-50 depending on the opponent's orders.
Defensive 4-4-2 based on counters and 4-4-2 through middle are what really cause troubles. That's why the ND sometimes fails as it gets played on the same zone by the 4-4-2 flat, while tho wingers on the ladder can still hurt.

The best counter to 4-4-2 is 3-5-2 V, normal mentality, both flanks, mixed passing, whole pitch pressing.
Reds on aml/amr and blue on dmc.
This works 95% against defensive 4-4-/ with mixed playzone and against the ones played through middle. It gets less effective with 4-4-2 through flanks in which case, if you realize so, you can move onto either 3-5-2 flat or 3-3-2W-2.

My quarters and semi CL matches were vs a q 62 and q 61.5 opponents both on 4-4-2 and both times i won on 5-0 and 6-0 aggregates.
