My issue with the butterfly is that a lot of the players are just dotted around the pitch, leaving free space to exploit. I'd be happy to test your orders with this formation and see if it does well for me. But 4-1-4-1 is what I use now after having 3 seasons of disappointment with the butterfly.

Actually... tell you i am playing against the butterfly tonight in a dead rubber CL match. I will use the 4-4-2 classic and see if he gets anything on me.

My problem is my 2 best players are AML & AMR so to play 4-1-4-1 with them I can only give them blue arrows so don't know if that is costing me using that formation against 442 or if I should put in weaker q players and play them as ML & MR if you know what I mean

MR and ML on red arrows = AML/AMR with no arrows, but only on the offensive. That's why using DMR/DML allows you to play the ams red arrowed and be more offensive, keeping one man more in defense which you can use too during offense as dmc.
