I'm still pretty new, but doesn't keeping them allow you to continue power training at a higher rate? Since lower star players generate more skill points?

No, because the system recognise the skill points that arent assigned.

Cup manipulation is not an advantage as it holds back your players quality for the previous season. So unless you intend on missing promotion then that's the only "advantage". On top of that, it doesn't even guarantee you an easy cup because other players would probably be doing the same
