Rofl my level 3 friend whos team average is 16.9 got put into a league with 30 team average.

The Quality in the Leagues vary (as you found) so sometimes there is quite a gap! I would try to compete in Cup, and if you are in it, CL to try and boost your income to buy new players.
When you say stars you must mean points? That is confusing. A five star gap is not possible, by definition.
