I am confused on this whole illegal formation. What do you mean someone on the right? Sorry but I am not very familiar with soccer formations..

When you say someone on the right, you mean the rightmost area of the field either top or bottom correct? Does not matter if its an offensive or defensive position? Is this a valid formation?

This is valid. Your right side would be the bottom row in the screen; you need DR, DMR, MR or AMR, you can have one or two players on each side. Three on one side and it's illegal, same for the left side.

When you have just 20% ball possesion is because you don't have at least 1 player on the right and left side, at least 1 st or mid (better to use at least 2 midfielders).
