Season 1&2 mine was 4-5-1 Attacking; Season 3&4 its been 4-5-1 Hard Attacking too.

On my 3rd team its played more than 50% of the time as defensive since it was established but preferred formation is 4-4-2 Hard Attacking.

So RJSlow's explanation sounds reasonable.
