Hy, read July post (Joshiko link).

If you have 3 players on same side, less then 3 defenders, no striker or no players on sides more then sure you will have an illeagal formation and your possession will remain 20% always.

Try always to have at least 3 defenders, 1 midfielder, 1 player on left/right side and 1 striker.
