    Can David beat Goliath

My wife ask me for advice and I have none to give her. She has just 51 tokens, so she cannot go and buy a team full of scouts, and even if she did her team would be inferior. So we turn to you, dear fellow managers, is it possible to beat the giant? Has it been done?

The opponent is a real Barcelona fan, and he also asked to be my wifes friend, probably to fight her in training matches as to find the correct tactics to beat her. Like he needs to!

And this is what she has to work with:

    Can David beat Goliath-orders.jpg

Do you guys think the formation and orders are good, or suggest you something else? How did you beat the giant?

Use 4-5-1 V style formation. This is the right counter formation for his 4-1-2-1 Narrow diamond. But ofcourse nothing is a sure win especially if you are over-powered in every angle.

    Formation: 4-5-1 V style

    ----------------------ST----------------------
    AML/ML--------------------------------AMR/MR
    ------------MC---------------MC--------------
    --------------------DMC----------------------
    DL/DC------DC---------------DC--------DC/DR

    Tactics:

    Team mentality: Defensive
    Focus passing: Down both flanks
    Pressing style: Own half
Tackling style: Normal or Hard-(if you can afford a lot of yellow cards and possibly get red cards in return.)
    Passing style: Long
    Marking style: Zonal

    Force counterattacks: Yes
    Play Offside trap: No

    Arrows:

    Blue Arrows: DL,DR,DMC
    Red Arrows: AML/ML,AMR,MR
The rest of your players...No arrows.

    Goodluck!

I have better formation on my mind. Trust me, this is your only chance, and this is rarely used formation:
    3DC-3DMW-3MC-ST. W means wide; DML-DMC-DMR
Hard tackling, defensive mentality (not very defensive), mixed passing through flanks, zonal marking, red arrows on DML and DMR, blue arrows on LMC and RMC only. Don't force counterattack, because your team will that way give oppo's chance to break it and start CA while your defence is opened! I've seen that enough time to keep CA off. Don't use players out of form, they won't help at all! Set win bonus on max, keep morale up.
If you have some friend who has stronger team than you, ask him to set up 4ND formation and try this one against it in friendly before that match.

I've played this season against that formation, used some 352 (can't remember which version exactly) and couldn't break quite weaker opponent. Later I used that bad experience against team which has several scouts and 2x8*. He played home, had 15% BP bonus from his army of friends but couldn't defeat my 5* team, FT was 0-0

Thanks for your advices - turn out we did not have time/did not care to change anything. So kept the tactics/orders I showed above. I agree that it it very dangerous to tic in the counter attack box when playing really good opponents.

Lost 0-3, and opponent did not watch the game.

The return leg now gives room for experiments. Thinking of something like man-on-man with easy tackling, and hard attacking on left side, otherwise keep my set up. I hope to outsmart the game engine, if they believe I will attack from left side, maybe Marinho Pereira on the right side will be un-marked and score a goal

The 2nd leg ended in a draw. Larsson played attacking mentality, long balls towards right side of the field, every other order was just left as default.

I am surprised that a inferior defense could withstand attacks from the likes of Messi and Neymar for 90 minutes, especially since they played attacking minded. Of course Barcelona had much more ball possession, more shots, shots on target. But look at the corner statistics! Maybe, with a Sinisa Mihajlovic knocking in corners to the head of a Batistuta, Larsson could have won.

My conclusion is that David can really beat Goliath, with a bit of creative thinking and luck.

Yeah, when you look at teams from some levels below, they look stronger. Look at this team:

My own team, my dear Dumagueteños, wich is one level lower then my wifes team, Larsson FC, have suffered a streak of defeats lately. So I will use a variation of your suggestion Top11_fan. The first match I tried it was a victory, so I have good hopes for this one:
