Can anyone remember when free agents were free to sign, or was I just dreaming. I have just spent 90M on 2 'free' agents just to bolster my level 31 team and make other players available for transfer to try to get some money available to stay alive.

On season day 1, there are many old free agents because they were released out of contract. But at the same time many teams received league prize money that solved the financial crisis (temporarily). So probably less players were forced to be released. Not sure if this is a source of free agents.
cookizz, there are very few free agents available today, but, I seem to remember years ago that buying a free agent was actually free and you just had to pay their wages. Now it costs 40% of the asking price plus wages.
Thanks Gert, pleased I'm not the only one to remember. It is getting vitually impossible to run higher level teams without buying tokens now. You can spend 4 years developing a team to be proud of and have it ripped away because you refuse to buy tokens.
I checked the free agents I signed recently, and also double checked the total fee paid today by my L12 team against its income & Expenses Statement. There seems no abnormality except wages, so as the transfer fee, of one of the free agents I signed today is exceptionally low.
Probably my server is different on this. Or my teams' levels are still too low (12 & 20)
If they charge 40%, that's unreasonable. If they charge 10%, this can at least be explained as matching the re-signing fee.
I think it's a shame that the players learning curve takes such a drastic fall at age 22. This, for me anyways, means that players only have a lifespan of max 6 years. I would have loved if talents where 16 years, and the halv curve was nearer 27 years. Both things would be more realistic in my opinion
I bought a FA a few days ago on my level 22 team, his cost was his wages. They are so rare the younger ones, this one was 24 and I am having problems selling him. :(
I will check on my main team if I ever see an FA on its TL..
I have had only one player his whole career, I wish it was more but the drop at 26 makes it really hard to keep up their Quality.
I totally wish the retirement date was later and the drops more gradual, but I don't see them changing. I can dream though.
Referring to the player with abnormal wage (market value 16.7M) mentioned above, on official signing upon player slot is available, his wage was changed from 2.32k to 1.3M. I double checked the news as well as Income & Expenses statement, the transfer fee is still same as old wage 2.32k. Anyway, I still cannot find extra 40% market value was charged.
Actually, wages of many players are close to 10% of their value. This is not free lunch for signing free agents.
maybe I'mmissing something here but I have been able to sell 1 player and bought 4 free agents and that has cost me 175M. I assume that I have to pay daily wages as well.

So you have to pay a one-time bonus equal to the wage for signing free agents...
As the wage is very high compared to the market value of the player at the higher levels, it's expansive to sign even free agents:eek:
175M for 4 free agents is such a huge sum and obviously more than the wages of them. The situation for my L12 team is different. Not sure if this different from server to server or level to level.
BTW, high level team may be more difficult to find free agents. Both my L12 & L20 teams are in same server. The auction market including free agent market for my L20 team is much more difficult comparing with that for my L12 team.
If memory serves, 40m wage for and old player (age 30+) is typical for a level 31.
I bought a 30y 138q 5* today and his wage is 21.1m (at level 24).
Totally it is harder the higher levels, people have a hard time selling players but don't want to lose the big chunk sacking them, and most try to sell their youth... so most of the ones I see are oldsters someone tried to sell and eventually gave up.
The price of an FA is their salary, and in the low levels it's really cheap but even in (say, level 24) the salary should be like 20M, so three FAs would be 60 or so.Yes you pay 'em daily too, but those numbers are nowhere near what you have Staggy, but you are a lot higher level? but the 175 I don't get at all.. you didn't sign a youth product right (I know stupid question but sometimes it's just something you do automatically and not think about)
Amane and Cat, thanks for your comments (and all others), I accept that I have to pay the wages which are 40M a season even for 33/34 year old players in their last year, but a 40m sign on fee for a 'free' agent that is only worth 100M is ridiculous. How are Nordeus expecting teams at high level to continue playing. Oh yes, buy tokens. Sorry Nordeus, that will never happen.
Old players are always expansive to use due to the lack of resell value. You should try getting cheap 18~24y players (players far away from next star are cheap and easy for grabs), train and use them for a few seasons, then sell them when they are close to the next star, so that you won't lose the money you originally invested.
Don't let your team filled with old players. If you can't afford to buy new players, keep your academy players, play friendly to gain cash, and grab youngsters for cheap to replace the retiring players, young players are cheaper to use compared to old players because their market value will increase as you use them.
My floating cash is plenty enough to use old players, but it's really expansive. They should be avoided unless you have huge sums sitting around.
Yes, to buy a free agent you must also pay in front a season wage, something which is pretty new :(
For my level is a great source of money profit because the analogy is very high and it's worthy specially if you can buy him for 1T but for higher levels where the wage is almost half of the value, the risk is high for that profit.
* the expensive bank loan for me is 15T for 18M' so 1T for 1,2M. Selling him, I will earn about 12M' .
This is an example from few hour ago, after I read that post. Finance before and after I bought this free agent (it's minus the wage).

Amane, my 18 year old players from my academy want 40M wages virtaully the same as a 33 year old. I have enough tokens to get 500M from the bank, but this will only allow me to buy 5 players and then I will not be able to pay wages as I am losing 20M a day. This season and next I am trying to build up my tokens so that I can start again, but, what I would like to do is be in a position where I can sell my academy players to build up my finances and become solvent over the season.
Niko, just read your post and I would love to get a 19 yr old free agent but sadly I have not seen any for months. All the free agents I see are over 30.
I used to keep a 22 squad, now I have as short a team as possible on my no money teams, and on my main, I keep only 1 GK so I can sign and sell youths.. I think the low T ones are even worth selling since I can still get more than buying $$. Really not looking forward to promoting with the finances so difficult to manage.
Players you can use only for one year eat up your money. FA that cost the wage value to sign practically use up 2x wage in one single season as they retire, which makes them expansive to use.
Young player who can be used for 2 years will be at a higher market value than they were 2 years ago. And for that the same money paid run for 2 years at least, therefore the cost to run is halved (assume you don't renew contract and sell him on third year).
Even if you renew the contract you pay the one time bonus that is good for 2 years, that is 33% cheaper than a retiring free agent.
At a money shortage, you should keep your 18y and other young players whenever possible, and only consider selling if their contract is about to expire. It can be unintrutive to keep a young player team at money shortage, but this is the most efficient way to gain money. Your wealth lies on their market value and when you sell them at 21 you will end up with a bigger profit margin, even more if you managed to sell him through negotiation offer.
Your balance should be positive if you keep a 22 player team, doing 2 games a day (1 league and friendy if no cup nor CL)
Invest properly so that your wealth won't slip away. Rebuilding your team may be difficult, but should be possible without token spending.
I remember them being free and I've only been playing since July. There was a problem that free agents were not signing properly and nordeus workaround on my server was to make them cost 1season of wages. Not sure of your level whether that fits or if its different on different servers.
I have a question. Free agents are from other levels and they are free because some manager for some reason release them (mostly finance) or there is a bankrupt in the team and the "bank" take some players of the manager for that reason, right ?
Then, why there aren't so many free agents in higher levels ? Is it because there aren't so many active teams ?
A lot of the FAs seen early on are old because they'll be the 'filler' players added in the new season for out of contracts.
At top of the server FAs will, more often than not, need to come from same or higher level teams so chances are lower with fewer teams.
Additionally if teams keep them longer then they'll be less viable - older again.
No idea if 'repo' players are put on as FAs or just destroyed.
Just guessing and putting off going to make dinner XD Better go now.

I 'm talking about the young ones, like 19 y.o. or little older (26-27).
There are also in TM, not very often like the +30 but I can see 5-10 / day.
In the higher levels there are fewer managers and they are a lot less likely to sack or let go a youth without trying to sell them. I myself have been signing and selling off my youth whenever possible for a few seasons now, where before if I had 22 players I was more likely to release the youth.
Also since budget is tight I try to sell the older guys many many times before I think about letting them go.
