To fully answer your answer here is what the abilities do

    Freekicks-score & assist
    Penalties-score penalties (useless)
    Corners-assist from corners
    Playmaker-create clearcut chances
One on one-composure in front of goal, beat offside trap (useless)
    Dribbler-make forward runs with ball
    Shadow striker-shoots from distance
    Defensive wall-blocks freekicks
    Header-stops crosses
One on one stopper-reduces chances of goals being countered
    Penalty stopper-stops penalties

Aha.. so my Mc Edgar davids that was Playmaker, really has attittude of Shadowstriker... for all the shoots from far away he scored...
That means every SA, is internally in every player, then, every SA, have some actions associated, and then, a % of effectiveness of teh actions related to the skills till a min. max. of %.... the visual SA, internally can be posible that is worst programmed that another, and this other despite is not related with the action of the visible SA, becomes the 1st choice and makes of the players what they are.

Here the theory illustrated about our confussions. That have sense really.

If I understand correctly you're not far off.
I believe players have stats better than others. Like a natural DC may have extra point in tackling but not heading. Compare that to another the other might have better heading than tackling. So in terms of quality it is integrated into said players coding giving him a slight boost.

Now say that slightly better headerer has header ability, that would be a match made in heaven making that defender a very successful headerer. Now say the slightly better tackler had header ability. Some might not see a difference with the defender but it's there.

I know it sounds silly but think of it like FIFA Ultimate Team, Remy with Hunter card would make him SLIGHTLY faster but with ridiculous pace anyway he will be very fast. Now put a Shadow card on Mertesacker you wouldn't see a difference in pace because he is slow.

In short, your CM scored from distance a lot because he may have already been a good shooter with creativity, had he had shadow he'd be shooting a lot more often.

I have to state, this is just my opinion. I didn't make the game lol.
