Strikers are useful, no doubt about that, the logic should be: the more strikers, the more goals - not necessary scored by the strikers. Very rarely get all the ST high ratings, usually only one or two of them - but they keep the defenders busy.
What is also important is whether you play down both flanks of through the middle.
I think that with what most people use for tactics - down the flanks - it is understandable (from the point of view of the engine) that the wingers score a lot.
If you are successful with through the middle tactics then the STs will benefit from that, IMO.
