For my current 2 teams, the max. no. of matches played by a single player are only 218 & 231 respectively. These players played for about 8 or 9 seasons and levels.

If you sign them under 21 and they're fast trainers and good performers they can last a few seasons. You don't have to sell them every season.
I've replaced 2 in my first team this season from the team that won me a treble last season.
