defender passing + possesion

In peoples opinion does defenders passing skill contribute to possession? Logically it would be would you prefer a defender with poor passing and very good defending or ok passing and good defending?

i go with good passing and defending.....
what is the use of tight defense if he doesn't know how to pass correctly??
