I´m not concerned with the meaning of the word Im more on about it not being a footballing term.
I´ve never heard the word roster used in any footballing term in the UK. Unless you know different?

edit: " Sir Alex checked the roster"… no Im just not going to buy that one

I'm just helping gizzmo and potentially other non-native speakers, since roster is an OED word and appropriate, if not common, in the context. (You were right that I didn't easily find an instance of it on BBC and can't clearly recall which commentators /leagues might use it)

Roster has the "descriptive list" quality distinguishing it; a roster will demonstrate who is fit and eligible, conditions, and positions of play. "Squad" is being described and can't be substituted in this usage.
