I have a player with a handshake icon in his status column. I cannot train him nor use greenies to improve his condition.

I've never seen this before. What's going on?

You have received an offer for that player. you need to go in to player profile and click on offers, accept / refuse / or set price. only when you refuse the sale you can then train him again

Another team has made you an offer to buy him. Accept and sell, or reject and you'll be able to train him again.
