i read somewhere about this "tanking a season"

can anyone please explain me what is it?
and what can be its benefits?

It's when you think you won't get promoted or won't get a good finish in the league so you throw the league away, play an illegal formation for the remainder of the season, finish last place and collect skill points. Next season, your players won't lose a star and then you'll have all those skill points to improve your team with.

You don't necessarily finish last, you just finish anywhere 8th-14th from a position where you look likely to be promoted by throwing a few games on purpose to save on tokens and develop your team. Not a bad idea for non-token buyers with poor quality teams.

The downside to tanking - No CL to play in next season, so less competitive fixtures, but you probably would not of won it anyways.

You don't know that, they are still a good team and the mark of what sir alex has left over can still win a few titles in the next few seasons.

With Morihnio going to Old Trafford in place of Fergie we will see the return of Ronaldo , then just think of their formation with RVP-Ronaldo-Bale upfront with Rooney tucking in behind them
On for the Treble next season with that setup...

Speaking as a United fan, all the talk is of Moyes and not Mohrinho, and I think Rooney will go to finance any Ronaldo move, also can't see Bale coming and they are supposed to be in for Falcao too.
