What I am learning this season and also the seasons before is, that having 11 players of around the same quality, all with good skills, is really helping the average performance of your team. I think Khris is very right with his theory, that the game picks a few players every game, who are set to contribute.
Having 1 or 2 star players is nice, but when some players of your team are bad or below average, you have some very good results, but also many bad results, especially vs opponents of similar quality. This season my best player is 155%, but the worst is still 123% and all have more or less high white attributes. I had not a single troll result. I lost 3 matches, all were close and vs very good opponents.

Yes I also believe in this theory that the game out of the 11 players picks few players. The name of these picked players are displayed in the commentary and ball possession is mostly with them.

The best we can do is to replace the players who is not getting the ball or whose name is not being displayed in the commentary.

I also believe that if the player you have set to take Free Kicks is not among the few players choosen by game engine for a game then he will keep on missing free kicks. This can be one of the main reasons why my player Ludovic is missing so many free kicks now. Earlier my team at Level 2 didn't had that many good quality players but now team has 8 mutants. So chances of Ludovic not being picked by the game engine is high.

Obviously if you have only one player as Striker in line up he will most often be picked by the game engine.
