If they instead randomly gave him a useless item for defence such as penalty specialist, then I rather train his SA myself as I will then be able to select the defence SA suited to my team. Else his useless penalty SA will be stuck till end of his career and there is no way I'm able to remove it.

I got corner special ability to my defenders THREE TIMES! If the randomness is not a complete randomness and it favors some SA more, then I feel like it favors the useless ones.
Then it is best we build defenders SA ourselves. The random given SAs, preferably give it to the midfielders.
its random, defender can learn AD,DW,FK,CK,PK so if you lucky you will get AD/DW but if you unlucky then FK,CK,PK. i never claim that random SA from sponsor, last time it screw my defender, build my defender then ruined because stupid SA...
If your GK doesn’t have a SA, it’s safest to use it on him. It’ll be either PK stopper or 1-1 stopper.
My Both GKs already have SA so I’ll use it on my MC and hope to get a playmaker or dribbler at worst.
