Friendlies - please advise as to who can play them against you

Hi All
I am level 87 so been in the game for a while - this morning (at 4.30am) my league rival who I played later on today (and lost 0-1) played me in a friendly. I am NOT a 'friend' of his nor is he in my association. I thought these were the only two occasions you could play friendlies?
PS. He won the friendly 3-0 which could have given him some pointers for the league game??
I cannot challenge him to one btw???

You can play a friendly match against whoever you want. You have to go through his association and find him like a member. Then the game gives you the option of a friendly match.
