The gaps in teams only occurs in the first 7 days of the season. The gaps appear if players have come off contract & are awaiting either resigning or releasing. If a team has gaps when a match starts, the game engine will repalce them from ebnch players that are eligible to play.

It seems like this is the correct reason for why this is occuring. I have had games where I havent turned up to watch and I had my team with a player thats injured or suspended and the computer picks the next available player from the subs bench to play (outfield for outfield)
