The crappy one will usually be 2 stars (so 'average' according to the game). However, the token bought one tends to vary. Usually they are 4 stars, though sometimes they will be high 3 stars on the berge of 4 stars. Overall, the higher the tokens they are, the better the trainer they should be.

The crappy one you might as well sell and get 'free money' unless he actually does improve a part of your team.
The one you pay tokens for varies. If they cost a fair amount of tokens, then usually they are very fast trainers. If not, they won't train that well. Best advice is to look at what you're given and see if you really need them or not.
