I thought force counter means you're the one who's doing the counter attack? Best used with defensive mentality and pressing own half

No, you do not have to play defensive, but you should play long ball when play counter attack. When I want to play counter attack I play NORMAL (if your opponent is stronger than you - play DEFENSIVE) and LONG BALL.

You are right about pressing own half when counter attacking.

IMPORTANT - Playing COUNTER ATTACK when your opponent has defensive midfilder is not effective.

man to man is applied when you have better quality players and never used it with offside trap. if he has better attackers and midfielders then play zonal with offside (unless he plays with aml/amr/amc)

I think it's worth clearing up the confusion, "Force counter attacks" means that you are the one doing the counter attacking.

It makes your team sit back and the other team comes forward, then when your team wins the ball it quickly passes it up field while they are still running back. This is why you need to use mixed or long passing, so as to play long balls to your players who are already in advanced positions, or who are running there. You also need players with good speed up front for long balls to work.

The reason it isn't good when your opponent has defensive midfielders is that they will stay back and be able to deal with your counter attack.
