Hey Paul, there are literally hundreds of threads on here debating that very topic. I have seen advice ranging from 33-50% of your max price for league games with slightly higher prices for Champion/Cup games and less for friendlies.

Personally I can vouch that you should get 100% attendance with 33%. As I have just started perusing this site myself, I haven't had time to do extensive testing.

One of the things that helped me the most was knowing the Attendance limits of each level:

L1 - 800
L2 - 2,500
L3 - 6,000
L4 - 11,500
L5 - 19,000 - My current level
L6 - 28,000
L7 - 40,000
L8 - 53,500
L9 - 69,000
L10 - 86,500
L11 - 106,000
L12 - 127,500
L13 - 151,000
L14 - 176,500
L15 - 204,000
L16 on-wards - 260,000

Oh, and I haven't noticed a difference in having a bonus and not, but that's mostly because I've had a bonus set since my first season (20k for all but friendly). I will say that I routinely defeat teams rated higher than mine, but that could be because I keep my Morale at Good or better, have all my assignments set, or many other factors.
