puzzled by 3DC-1-2-3W-1

It's very rare that a tactic causes me nightmares. But this is a typical case. I've faced the same oppo playing this 3 times in a row without a win! His team is slightly weaker than mine. He sticks to his tactic no matter what occurs in the game. And I must admit, he is right to do so.
Yesterday, he got a red on minute 10 and played for 80 mins with only 2 def. And I could only score once ! I used 4-5-1V and 3W-2DMC-2-2W-1 with the same "success". Domination but no goals! I play counter and obviously, down the flanks. But in spite of the huge gap offered to my great wingers, no goals! What would you do ?

Try long passes and drop out counterattacks. Also the 5 midfielders are a waste. Either the ML and MR will have a forward arrow either replace them with more attackers (if you have capable of course)

I guess his players' highlighted skills is so high while the other skills is so low which will give him more quality. check his players out.

Arrows: 3DC - DMC --> down - AMC --> up

Defensive - Through the middle - mixed passes - Counter ON
High pressing - Normal tackling - Zonal - Offside OFF

Thanks for your input. I like the tactic you exposed but impossible for me to use as I am short of DMR. No, he's not used one of these tricks for boosting players quality.

Defensive, long pass, flanks, counter on.

4-5-1V is one of favourite tactics but I normally do not use it against 1-striker teams. I may try it for a change.

I would use 3Dw-2DMC-2MC-AML-AMR-ST
or
3Dw-1DMC-ML-2MC-MR-2ST (or AMC-ST)

but I think he has the right "chemistry" he found, not the formation.

Try to find from older games, which oppo formation gave him a hard time and which (possible) mentality his oppo used.

Well, with 4-5-1V and long balls I kicked him out of cup easily. Now, I'm going to see whether it was a trend or a matter of luck in our CL semi-final...
