When you are playing against a team with no wingers, but fullbacks and you are playing 4 at the back, you can push one of your fullback up (You need 3 defenders to be legal formation) since you don't need them to defend much but play more offensively.

Also, if you play 3 DC, it would be better to play dml/r then playing 5 at the back.
