I think the match ended, would you like to show the score and your formation ???
Level 1 - League 2nd place (started late, in the season)
    Level 2 - League 1st place, CL 1st place, Cup (lev 4) 1st place
    Level 3 - League 2nd place, Cup (lev 6) 1st place
    Level 4 - League 1st place, CL 2nd place, Cup (lev 7) 3rd place
Level 5 - League 1st (won all games), CL 3rd place

The match is today at 18:41 GMT.

Thanks for everyone's response. However I have not seen a consensus on formation or tactics. Everyone has given a unique option. Surely there should be option where many agree on a single option to counter and win

Actually there shouldn't be a definite tactic to counter another formation. Formation is probably just half of the battle. The other half is made up of players & random game engine. This is supposed to probably add to the realism. You can counter specific threats with the right formation, but sometimes you cant counter the whole opponent especially if some are on form.

Just read the suggestions and go with your gut. No such thing as a guaranteed winning counter esp if both managers are actively playing.

    Good luck mate

they say 4-4-2 classic counters 4-2-2-2 hexagon counters 4-2-2-2 hexagon, however I wouldn't chose that formation. ive got some suggestions which could help you.
3n-2dml/r-2-1-2 - through the middle, mixed passing, attacking, no counter and no offside with arrows on AMC and STs
4-3n-1-2 - attacking, through the middle, short/mixed passing, no counter and no offside, arrows on AMC and STs
3w-4-1-2 - attacking, mixed, mixed, no counter, no offside, arrows on AMC and STs

these formations should be useful as they dominate the middle, and use an AMC against a formation which doesnt use any sort of DMC to counter it. and you should use HARD tackling, as he is higher quality than you.

or you could use 3n-5-2v or 3w-5-2v with attacking, down both flanks, mixed, no counter, yes offside with arrows on AML/R and STs.

NOTE: if a formation does not work for you, change it to a new one and if the formation is fulfilling your needs by countering the 4-2-2-2 hexagon, then leave it as it is.

good luck mate, hope you win.

Ok again thanks for all your suggestions. After doing more research on the forum and trying to find old results against the formation in questions. Also my opponent has lost only 1 match in the league and he lost from a weak opponent who used 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow diamond. So going by his recent loss to 4-1-2-1-2 Narrow diamond formation, i believe the game engine could be in favor of this. So my plan for tonight is below. If you think I can improve on any part please let me know. Thanks

    4-1-2-1-2 Narrow diamond :

    --ST---ST--
    ----AMC----
    ---MC--MC--
    ----DMC----
    DL-DC-DC-DR

    Mentality : Defensive
Focus Passing : Through the middle
    Pressing : Own Half
    Tackling : Normal
    Passing Style : Mixed
    Counter : ON
    Offside : OFF

    or

    3N-2DML/DMR-4-1

    -----ST----
    -----------
    ML-MC-MC-MR
    DML------DMR
    --DC-DC-DC--

Blue arrows on all DC and DML/DMR
    Red arrow on ML/MR/ST

    team mentality = Defensive
focus passing = Down both flanks
    pressing style = half
    tackling style = Hard
    passing style = mixed
    marking style = Zonal
    Counter attack = yes
    offside trap = no

    and when things go wrong

    3-4-3 flat with

    --ST-ST-ST--
    ------------
    --MC-MC-MC--
    ----DMC----
    DL-DC-DC-DR

    team mentality = Normal
    focus passing = mixed
    pressing style = half
    tackling style = Hard
    passing style = mixed
    marking style = Zonal
    Counter attack = yes
    offside trap = no

4-1-2-1-2 narrow diamond should be used with
    attacking
    through the middle
    short passing
    zonal
    own half
    hard tackling
    no counter and no offside
red arrows on AMC and STs

yes, these are the perfect orders for narrow diamond. hey also if you want to dominate the middle more, you could sub your DMC for an MC, and use a 4-3n-1-2. this will mean you will dominate the middle of the pitch.
4-3n-1-2 should be exact same orders and arrow placements as the 4-1-2-1-2 nd. but start with the 4-1-2-1-2 nd and see if that works better for you.
