Hey man, I had this very question yesterday! I won the league last year undefeated and it was my second season. This year I'm in a more difficult league it seems, there are at least two other people I am directly competing with. However there is only one other guy who is undefeated, he has a very expensively assembled squad and that formation. So basically It was our turn to play yesterday and I just thought I was screwed haha. However, I decided to take a gamble and play with a formation I had never really used much before. I went for a 4-4-2 Diamond, so that would be your usual back for, a CDM, two CM's, one AMC, two ST's. I had my fullbacks with red arrows, my CB's with blue, my CDM with blue, and the rest red. I had short passing, normal (not defensive or attacking), zonal, normal tackling. I'm not sure if it would work for you but I won 2-1 and had 58% possession. A lot of people talk about hard tackling but I always think that unless the team is far, far, far better than you, its better to not take the risk. Keeping possession always seems to work better for me. He was watching the game whilst I wasn't as well, I imagined him and all his tokens weeping haha.

Focus on their flanks and you will win

Copy his formation and just hope for the best XD. Try to have your best players though. OR focus on defense if you believe that your squad would not stand up a chance against it. I always play defensively just in case. If you can survive an attack, you can definitely win the counter attack.
