I like formation (1), and think formation (2) is not well balanced. But sometimes I feel formation (2) is not easy to handle.

Formation (1) can be good depending of the players as can be very easy to counter, formation (2) its great if you know how to set also can be very hard to beat.

I prefer 2 up top as you can easily get marked out the game.
If you like the width maybe go 4-1-3-2?
