At the beginning of next season, they're out of contract, so you can't sell them (as they technically aren't yours to sell). You can only re-sign them (and sell them immediately) or let them leave...

Star is always better, so I agree with Khris :) but it is late season, and you should wait till next season to buy new players. because if you are promoted your current players will 'lose' a star...
