Yes they work in every position, i remember examples that i had some seasons ago. A dc-dmc with playmaker sa playing as a dc and launch a direct long pass to my winger and score, the icon show up ....

Let's say I have a shadow striker AMR MR and play him in MR. Or same with aerial defender DC DMC and play him in DMC. So when a player plays in a position, where it normally wouldn't be possible to...

Actually, my point was relevant. That SA make no difference in penalty shootouts because penalties are in my opinion, a lottery and pre-determined regardless of whose SA was flashing.

I do it a lot as well.
Another thing to be noticed - when your bad player has an SA, the recommendation also has SA. Not always useful, as you might get DC with penalty taker for example but still....

On low end team not so bad, 6T for a player 27% better than my actual. From what I have read here he should cost about 30T to sign permanently. Not good, but not as ridiculous like the 140%...
