Finals is a matter of lottery at times and result of 1-goal difference game can just be about luck, or lack of. So keep pride in how you have been playing and in winning nearly everything.
Well, just from an analytical point from the stats (which I always do after a draw or rare loss, or even a mightily close win that should have been a comfortable one), I feel there are a few points that would prompt a change at half-time, if ratio is similar at half-time:
1) Your possession is some 30% more but with only 2 shots more while only 30% on target. That suggests either the formation isn’t ideal against the opponent (low # of shots vs possession advantage), or your main attackers are totally off form (ok-performance should be at least 40%-45% on target). At least 1 change of personnel or try reshuffle of formation should be tried at the half-time interval.
2) Pass completion at 90% is way too high for a tight game for winning purposes, especially in a game when our shot on target % is low. Regardless of opponents’ quality, creating chances via possession would just mean missing chances after chances by off-form attackers via passing and crossing with our quality advantage.
With own painful experience, it is way better to switch to a defensive formation and order even if it doesn’t make sense against a weaker opponent, play long (or at least mixed if long balls result in opponents’ counter easily) and just rely on individual quality to take that 1 chance via our counter or building from the back by midfielders and even wide defenders even if it means passing rate dropping to 80%.
Well, as we know very well, there would still be some 1-2 troll matches per season despite our best efforts. Sucks big time if it happens in finals. We move on and try even better next season.
