How do you play this game?

I started playing this game a year ago.
I read everything i could find - all the official posts, evrything that was in this forum, and even managed to dig out archives from the old forum and some obscure off-site tutorials.
I studied different formations and techniques, put a lot of time into figuring out the legal formation criteria.

In 10 competative seasons I won 8 league trophies, 1 2nd and 1 5th. In Champions league I have 4 trophies and 2 runner up finishes. I've got 2 3rd place Cup finishes.

I've never bought tokens, but every season I've fielded a strong 5 star-6 star squad. In short, I've had some mediocre success at the game. But, at this point, I'd like to know one thing:
How do you play this damned game?

What are the rules? Do tactics and formations do anything? How about player abilities? Is it just completely friggin' random?

my rule as a non token buyer take the game with a pinch of salt as you never know what`s going to happen, one day you lose to a far weaker team next you beat a far stronger team but i all way`s try not to lose although the the win would be better

this rule applies to practically every single game: ditch logic. i too tried following ancient threads here, some good results, others just completely howTF can this has happened. so yeah as saransh said 'field a squad, close ur eyes, cross ur fingers and hope u win!!!!'

These threads about whether or not formations/tactics matter keep popping up every few weeks. It has already been well established that Nordeus has no plans to give us the answer. Honestly, there should be just one debate about whether formations/tactics matter, and get that thread stickied to the top because all these threads are just spamming the forum.

I do feel there is lack of organisation to some parts of the Forum, the General area and more in need of it, the Tactics, but I think people find the search function on here lacking, and so post anew. I would be interested to hear ideas on how to make it better, but too many stickied posts happens, and then it becomes hard to see the other posts.

I think everyone has some ideas on what they think works in the game, and discussion of that is an important function of this Forum.

I didn't answer on this thread before, mostly cos I play the game as if the numbers, tactics and modules have some reference to performance and I have had some success, but I like seeing others thoughts on the subject.
