what is illegal?

ive seen 80-20 games that ive been involved with ....and for the life of me couldnt work out why . i thought playing someone out of position didn't really affect possession that much ? i thought it was had to this number of players in that area / that many in another

if you start off with 4-4-2, no problem, but then move out a couple of defenders early on, or empty the midfield, or move the strikers to the wings as AML/R, you will become illegal and the possession will drop to 20 probably gradually. the result will still show your starting line up as 4-4-2, but in reality you will have played 80 odd minutes in an illegal formation

that combined with all 11 players being out of position as was the case here, and you have a recipe for 6-0. not guaranteed a win by any means but it helps with some nifty trickery. i just couldnt work out why 4-4-2 was showing as 20% possession illegal formation. worked out how it was done eventually
