It depends a lot of the servers.
For exemple in one of my teams in the last 3 seasons, i have manage to bought 5* players on the 1st day of the season for 1T, because there arent any bid wars. But on day 2 they start and get worst on day 3.
This season i even manage to buy a 19 years old Freekick specialist with 1 token on day one.
It seems that now everybody are afraid to bid on day one, so there is no one on the auction.
THIS GAME IS TO RANDOM! I STOP WAISTING MY TIME!
Also, some people just seem to lose their minds when they open the market. SAs seem to draw bids like crap does flies.
I bid on a ST valued nearly 7m, 38Q being sold by Piggy FC to see if others flocked to it - just wanted the reminder to go look as I expected some bids even this late in the season. Nope, they were too busy throwing tokens at SA players and I won the damn player.

My level 1 and 2 auctions were quite nice actually and I could easily buy new players for 1 token or 2, quite often being the only bidder. So I'm not surprised to hear that a level 2 manager went into an auction with 2 tokens only. Now the demand for fresh blood is so heavy that for me there's no difference what time I check the market - it's just a slight difference between 3 bidders for an over 30 year old and about 15 bidders for the younger players
All the advice given in this thread is really helpful, and I would add only this: observe the market. Even if you're not interested in a particular player, just observe the auction to see how many tokens were spent, how many bidders took part in the auction, what quality and age was that player etc. This could help you find what time the auctions are the least crowded and how many tokens you should have in your pocket to stand a chance. In my market, the best time to go shopping is Sunday, about 1-3 pm GMC, which is kind of surprising for me.
Same here for lvl 1 and 2. Now on lvl 3 everyhting changed. Also been doing the same like you suggest. I already know about 20 players on my server who are not my friends just from the market. Know who's a token buye, know who's an annoying token buyer, sometimes I just see and go like "oh, this guy again"

I keep seeing that everyone fights over players about to increase a star, but it doesn't make sense to me. I feel like I am being dumb and missing something obvious, but why would this make a difference? Does value take a big jump when a star level is increased?
My inexperienced expectation is that is increases gradually everytime that skill points are added, so that you always pay the correct value and you don't pay an artificially low cost right before a star increase. Is this wrong?
