If you need to be frugal with Tokens, avoid the first couple days. Find when more people are asleep on your server. Buy guys that aren't as close to their next star, just turned 5* are the least likely to cause a bidding war, as no one below you sees them and they are less attractive to those above. Favorite the player you are interested in and wait until the last minutes to see if other managers bid - if a couple do, remove him from favorites and keep looking.
It's hard since I'm lvl 4. Other managers in the same level are my problem. And the managers who seem to bid on every player.
