How are the groups paired after the group-stages?

I know the 1. and 2. goes through, but which other groups do they play?

Is it 1. place group A vs. 2. place group B, 2. place group A vs. 1. place group B, 1. C vs. 2. D, 2 C vs. 1. D and so on, or is it just random pairing?
