I also use 4-5-1 V very often (or at least I start with that).
Usually set defense/counter/from the flanks
I give red - up arrows to my wingers and one blue-down arrow to my DC.

Interesting... I also play 4-5-1V very often, but I can't beat 4-4-2s. We have a FA-member, who also is able to beat 4-4-2 with 4-5-1V...

The way I use my 4-5-1v against 4-4-2:
Red on dmc, blue on both dc
Focus: mix
Pass: mix
Normal, low, zonal; no off/count

Some time add red arrow either wings or mc's after 30 min, when I see they rating 7 or 7+

In my 3 seasons my 4-5-1v lost only 2 matchs, both were bad day or dicing or trolling. One against 4-5-1 F, over 25% lower q then me on last season CL final. Second one this season on cup pro, against 3N-3N-2wam-2.
Tomorrow this season's CL final, If I lose then it'll be my third (don't wish for me that please)

PS: my 70/75 green pack bring CL trophy today
I give extra position to aml & amr, as ml & mr, now today's CL final match I use 4-1-4-1 instead of 4-5-1v, when I see opp bring 2 Amc + 4 mc, won 4:0

I use 4-4-2 and every season I end up at least with 1 trophy so I highly recommend to use it next season

I am not sure of many things in this game except for 2:
1) 4-5-1V do not BEAT but DESTROYS 4-4-2 (at similar level). I am in a >40 victories run.
2) the only better record I have is with 3N-1-3N-2WAM-1 against 4-4-3 with which you can beat easily teams one star above yours

i haven't lost in a long time with 3142 when i use it, its my favourite for shutting down short middle formations when I need a narrow win/draw vs strong opponents

4-1(DMC)-2w-2n-1 gets my vote. I've only seen it played in associations by Chinese teams. However, it's been really irritating to play against

Yes I face that formation on asso and I use 3n-2dmc-3wm-2 for my win
