Another good reason for friends is to keep your enemies closer. Scout people in the cup and champions league. If they're a similar rated team and it could be a tough game, see how they have lost in the past and to try use that against them!

My experience with in-game friends, as long they are not in my competition it's oke.
Just before the competition match against a in-game friend in the competition he arranged a friendly match, checking my squad and formation and than he cancelled the match if that is possible because the matches have never been played.

Support from friends is very crucial...specially in important matches...although i don't have FB friends playing TE but, i do have many in-game active friends and i keep updating it as and when required.
