question concerning arrows

i am still a little confused about arrows. do they convert ur player into the role the arrow is pointing or do the arrows affect the mentality of the player?
i mean, a dl/dr with a red arrow does convert to a dmlr/dmr or does affect his mentality making him to run up the flank if the arrow is red or to stay back if the arrow is blue? i ask specifically for dl/dr since there is no role below dl/dr on the defense.

It makes them go in for attacks or stay back and defend.

I play 4-5-1V and I use blue arrows on CB's and red arrows on AML, AMR and striker.

Can we have wing positions, would be ahead of AMR and AML to each side of the strikers?
There are multiple ways to define roles in football, and the current one is the one we chose. AMR and AML with arrows set to forward would be the wing positions you are asking for.

This would make defenders with an arrow basically a defensive sweeper
