I usually do it after I have trained their base stats for quit a bit, this is for new signings. I usually don't assign a new position for them to train up to till at least after like 10 training sessions. But I do think it is worth it. I train them to become familiar in positions I imagine them being in during a match. For example, my AMLs and AMRs I usually train them to be AMC and ML/MR depending on where they are since I can imagine points in the game where they will need to operate or fall back into these positions. With my AMCs I train them to be ST and MC for similiar reasons. DCs are trained to be DL/DRs and my DMC is usually trained to be MC and AMC since I want him to be comfortable in all midfield positions and help with attack when the pressure is being put on the opponent.I think it's worth it, but I don't do it out the gate- not every player is meant for this. Watch how often their base stats raise, if it is not very often you can expect the same progress when trying to teach them another skill or a new position. But I usually work with younger players so I end up having 22/23 yos with 3 position masteries. Maybe I'm overthinking but my team is always solid in attack and defense and I believe this strategy has something to do with it.

i did several seasons with no special ability players and the last couple with them all having 1, i've been competetive either way, i find if i put my best crosser on corners he'll do at least as well as a specialist corner taker, likewise a good shooter will score free kicks as often as a lower rated shooter who has free kick taker ability, but i cant get my head around defenders you can buy that have not very good shooting or finishing numbers but are free kick specialists or penalty takers, or not very good crossers being corner takers, even worse, drs and lrs being short arses with no heading numbers worth having yet are aerial defenders?, at least if you by a defender thats multi position, heading will usually be a key skill, and making him an aerial defender is more believable, but in truth, its hard to know whats what in this game most of the time, at least multi position players(def/mid or mid/attack) help keeping 10% bonuses through training easier, so i see benefits to having multi position players where as i cant always see the point in the special ability. is there ever a simple answer where nordeus are concerned?
