Story of my best player

So this is my best player, carlos de andrade and he has some 320 goals in round 270 esque games. As I have attached in the pics above those are his stats.

But as has been the case with both my wingers, they start playing pretty badly once it comes to semi finals and finals of the cup and champions league. I am yet to have 1 final or semi final where they have a rating more than 7.5. I almost always end up losing in semi finals and finals thanks to them all of a sudden playing very bad.

Can you people tell me why this happens? This has been happening since last 5 6 seasons. I have won leagues and cups. But CL continues to be an elusive dream with 3 losses in finals, 2 in semi finals and 1 in quarters.

Because mainly in competitive games rating does count more than skills? If this is your best player than it means the AvQ of your team isn t as big as i expected.
Show me a pic of your team and who did you played against in CL.

I have 2 CL finals so far at lvl 4, the one at lvl 4 should be determined today.
I won 1 and lost the other.
The won i lost at lvl 2 was against the 2nd place of my group against who i won 5-0 and 4-0 respectively, in the final i lost 3-4. I can t blame myself cause that is BS . No other team scored more than 2 goals against me bar that game, so how was that possible? idk, but couldn t watch the game since i was taking driving lessons.
so kudos to NORDEUS for ruining me a perfect streak of trophies wins that time. I haven t lost a trophy ever since.

This is not my best player in terms of ovr. In terms of returns. He is. My striker has an ovr of 140. And DC 130 esque.

My team rating is 120 and the team I played had an OVR of 119. So very very equal teams. I defeated him in the away leg, where he came with 6 supporters. And today he both failed to see the match but he defeated me and he went through on away goals.

Pretty disappointed. Though won the cup yesterday, thanks to some good play by my 140 rated striker

more often than not the game engine also manipulates the game so your best player either gets injured/second yellow/sent off before semi-finals/finals its so obvious leading up to these matches and fixed

Here is my team. My MC had a red card for today's match. So had to play the spare MC.
And this is my default formation, and I had a streak of 54 matches win before this game.

Arrows i keep changing as per requirement. As I have a weak opponent to play against next in the league, so I am playing attacking

Really nice team, it s very similar to mine although i have 2 9* players and 3 7* with the rest being low 6* (121.7%) and we have very similar formation too 4-2DMCs-3-1

Would like to share my best player too since he crossed the 100 goals barrier this season. Doubt it will happen again :rolleyes:
Not his best season in G+A, last season was 94g and 65a=159 goal involvements while this season he has 154, but there are 5 games remaining and he has big chances surpassing that.

I had one CL Final at level 4, I won that one, I won the one on Level 5,

I could not win the two finals on level 2, I couldn’t win the one on level 3.

But I hope he doesn't end up ****ting the bed in semis and finals like my wingers. They inevitably end up doing that. God knows why. 🙄

On the other hand my striker always shows up in big games, he obviously is 140 rated so pretty strong, but goes non existent against easy opposition.

My AMC either scores in bundles or keeps quiet.

Pretty weirdos I got in my team 😕

In the cup final i won 5-3, 3 of my goals came from the ST and 2 of my goals from my AMC.
My 2 9* wingers haven t scored any and my best player assisted twice.
Idk what to say about this, they are all inconsistent except maybe my Suazo which bounces back immediately.

May sound stupid but why would a player need 2 SA? the most effective SA i ve seen is FK specialist, that s like the only one i would give to my best player, maybe even corner specialist, idk...but one on one scorer doesn t do the trick lol.

Some managers claim SA does not work, or not as much as it ‘cost’. And I have to say that is totally misleading.

The following would be based on vs similar or weaker opponents, with my own experience from matches in bracket. Examples:
A) AMs with ’Shadow Striker’ scores loads of long shots, and they tend to ‘push back’ the defender when vs the last defender, then scores from range (They are more likely to take first-time long shots for direct goals as well when others will opt for another pass)
B) Any of ST/AM with ‘FK Specialist’ scores more freekicks (Please note that single-position ST as freekick taker may result in a huge drop in assist in set-piece rate, as their crossing value is generally low) - Best to be at least ST/AML(R)[+AMC/ML(R)] as left and right freekick taker
C) AML, AMR, ML or MR as ‘Corner Specialist’ seems useful - DL or DR is difficult to train as drills with crossing always come with shooting (wasting conditions) or heading (wasting unless also as DC, who should then get ‘Aerial Defender’ instead)
D) ‘One-on-One’ under ST only works very well in specific circumstances, such as formations like 4-1-4-1 or 4-1-3-1-1, ST having very good speed stat and team playing counter.

The rest are well documented and have other threads explaining as well.

We all have our own way of setup, so SA choice to complement our team is very much dependent on our style of play. For me, buying players should look at multi-position first, and I would rather there is no SA and spend some 50-60 packs to train to suit my team for at least 7 seasons. Having a multi-position plus a perfect SA for the team would just be an icing on the cake (Usually that comes with a hefty token cost, so not really an attractive auction to win :p ).

If we buy 4 star young FTs, it only cost 30 plus greens to train a 50 SA with world class regimes. We should also try to use those drills which the player has low skills. I think it isn't costly if keeping player for a 5-6 seasons. I can't tell it is effective but I have been playing without SA and support and do ok. I read there is an effect but is minimal. But alot of things have minimal effect but might be substantial when combined.

SA, bonuses, attendance, support, morale, condition have all been said to have only a little effect but when you have it all. It might just be what helps you beat a troll result for example.

You are very correct there on possible effects.

The effect of each is indeed minimal. If to be put in chances, maybe that SA would be ‘activated’ once every match only, or even not at all. Bonus, attendance, support and morale probably makes a few % difference on its own.

When playing against weaker opponents, our team should be good enough to create and take enough chances to win handsomely most of the time.

But when against similar or slightly stronger opponents on paper, if adding those benefits altogether, they may provide the very tiny edge, say scoring an extra away goal and somehow win an unfavourable tie.

That also helps in troll games as you suggested (extending our advantage even further and somehow overcome the bad roll of dice).

I just read the full thread. My best player is an AMC but almost never performs like he usually does during big games. Semis and finals. He assists during big games. I was beginning to think the script eliminates the best players for both teams leaving the game up to the others. Or the script already selected the positions for both teams that will be instrumental in the game and the win is based on those selected players. Just a thought.

might be. My dc ended up scoring 2 yesterday, one from a pretty long range. I was like, hey, what's happening! 😂🤣

In semis and finals tactics aren't exactly creating a differentiator. Coz the team who gave me a close fight yesterday in cup final is 9 points behind me in the league. Lost the league games pretty handsomely. Normally he plays too attacking, so its easy to break on counters against him.

Same in SF of CL, we played the same teams (me not having a key player in my best midfielder in the 2nd game), the same tactics too, mostly, and we had drastically different results with very similar teams.

If that's the case, then it probably good to have a few key players just in case with the rest of the team not too far off. Max and myself experienced the DC scenario you mentioned a few seasons back. Both games in finals. Both of us won 1-0 with DC scoring only goal and mom. What are the chances, its just probably the same script.

Same thing when I won back to back Champions League finals, the first one 4-1, I had 2 defenders score and 1 defensive midfielder and one midfielder, my player with 164 goals in 147 games only assisted twice.

Then the next season in the final, we won 1-0 in the 88th minute from my DC “Mucci” he actually performed amazingly in the huge matches

Pretty sure that SA are cosmetic or have a very small effect in game, also suspect that the 10% bonus thing is a myth and doesn t work also.

Alot of people say that. But when I look at the some of the very successful managers through associations. Their players all have SAs. Small effect but 30 plus greens isn't much when you average out over 5-6 seasons. since it doesn't cost much to train, why not?

At the lower levels the 30 greens is quite something, it s not that i can t afford but i don t see the point of it.Might do it later, but for now i don t see any effect with or without them.
Once i had a godly team, even godlier than what i have now 123% quality, all with SAs and i couldn t get through the CL groups because 2 oppos were 1 lvl higher, and similar or under my quality with no SA and they both went through.
So what s that all about?

Yeah, SA’s are cosmetic in my opinion, the only ones that ever worked for me were, shadow striker on an AMR/AML and the Free kick worked on an ST or an MC

It's true what you mentioned. It's a small effect so we can't count on it to guarantee us anything. Anyway, you played long enough to see alot of undeserving semi active teams beat strong active teams right? We can't beat what the game engine wants.

For training SAs, I think it not about low level. It's about world class training and choosing the drill which the players has the lowest skill. I followed one of the guides. I can't rem which one it was now. I think I used press the play which was my only world class at that time and I used it on attackers with very low defensive skills. I only bought 2 18 year old FTs attackers this season due to budget constraints early this season.

And for what purpose? The same thing triggers when they head the ball away from their box without any SA.
Keepers save penalties without having that SA.
Corner i am not that sure about it but as long as your players have high passing and crossing he should play the same.
And FK is 50/50, you either believe it or not.

I have played the game for a few years and have seen many times the SA icon appear above my players wherever they make that vision pass, deadly free kicks etc, and I hereby summarise for this debate ----

1. SAs are important. Nordeus programmers aren't going to waste time making those cute icons floating about wherever a special skill is used.
2. Players hidden real abilities are even more important. I have players without SAs who are often man of the match and scores lots of goals and make lots of assists, season after season, and are often Cups top scorers and assists.
