Defensive with counters works good for me against both.. but it's better to use it against Stronger or equal teams

4-4-2 is probabbly the best and easiest to manage, also very efective.. If you'r a beginer and you haven't figured out how exactlly to set up your tactics just go with 4-4-2 it works fine.

Just pick your favourite stile and go with it.

    Cheers for post number 1000
Now I'm wondering why two of those didn't make it into your top 10 formations.

I don't think I will be playing 3-4-3 anytime, but I'd like to hear your opinions on how to play 3-5-2 (either flat or V-style).

Frankly, this I find difficult to compute: How do you force counterattacks when you're pressing high up the pitch?

And then, at the same time, you tackle easy while man-marking?

    Seriously?

I mean, I'm no Mourinho, but that doesn't make any footballing sense now, does it?

Must have been an error ahah never used easy tackling on 4-5-1 myself..usually goes with normal
I did set high pressing there cause I've got 4 players in defence, 5 in the middle (one defensive and two attacking mids) and for some reason with high pressing the AML AMR play better while pressing whole pitch.
In fact i only set high pressing for 4-5-1 Defensive, if you look up at other defensive formations they'r set to press own half of the pitch
cause they've got 0 or 1 Attacking mid.
Playing 4-5-1 defensive pressing whole pitch makes your team work better in both attack and defence for some reason, i've tested every possible settings on this formation and that's what worked best for me.
Managed to get more shots on target and concerned less goals this way.
I see your point there and i know you'r right and I'm not trying to say that this would work in real football, in fact.. it's a controversy but that's TopEleven
    The mistery of defensive 4-5-1..
Here's a game I had against an equal opponent.. he even watched the game but couldnt do anything.. won 0:8 using 4-5-1 defensive down both flanks pressing whole pitch.

You should try and see if it works good with your team, once you test different settings on that formation you'll understand
    what im talking about

A wordy reply there, Becks, but you kinda sailed around the point by some way.

I'm not arguing whether or not to press high, or to tackle easy, or to play man-marking, or to force counterattacks. I'm sure all of these options are useful in some way.

What puzzles me is that you play defensively and press high up the pitch and force counterattacks. I mean if you press high up the pitch you don't really play defensively, and also will never get into a position to play a proper counterattack which typically starts in your own half.

I know there is a lot of confusion about formations and tactics going on here, but some of those things just don't go together. I've tried a few silly combinations (pressing high with easy tackling, man-marking with easy tackling to name but a few) and got punished every time.

Needless to say, I hardly ever play 4-V-1.

I just looked at your post and thought: 'That makes no sense' and I still think that at least for the first part (you clarified the 'easy tackling' thing).

think they key word here is "high" but that actually means whole pitch, it doesn't just mean that you pressing in attack but you'r pressing the opponent everywhere in the pitch i guess.
as i said i use high pressing cause i want all 5 mids to give their best and not just 3 of them. that's how it works for me on topeleven
It's something like playing like Barcelona this season, they aplay pressing almost everywhere yet their MCs play defensive most of the time and cover big areas, allowing DL/DR to go forward in the middle of the pitch..

Yep ofc, said that many times.. it's worth using it as your players work harder to earn their ratings.
It's like playing your players on 100% with high pressing and 80% with low.
