For me the best plan in to have 5-6 young players (fast trainers) who have high quality after training so they can be (early) 6* players also in the new season.
Then you buy 4-5 5* from the market.
Don't go for players with special ability or 3 positions.
A player only DL or MR and not too high q (not with a lot of the 6th orange star) is cheaper.

Also a good solution is to send some offers 3-5 tokens for a start, to nego list players (that's total of 15-20 tokens for you to pay).
Another solution is to buy a cheap scout list player with 39 token.
Then you start with 11-12 players and buy later the rest.
After 6-7 days when things are more calm in the market.

Also don't invest much to a GK or ST.
They just follow the flow of a match.
A good DC (if have "aerial" or "def.wall". better), one MC and two ML-AML , MR-AMR or an AMC , those are the key players you must invest more.
