Hi, currently I am having trouble with 413w2, have drawn and lost against this formation in champions league, and have a guy in my league who uses it. Tried using counter formations and bog standard 442 but to no avail. Has anyone got a formation that has been successful against it this season? Orders and arrows would be appreciated.

4-1-4-1, normal mentality. Red arrows on ML/MR.
It will allow you to block his central MC with your DMC (you can red arrow him if you want).
Your attacks will be mostly done on the flanks, but don't set order to flanks passing (since you don't have real AML/AMR), just take mixed.
Which team is the best quality-wise ?
Tried that, and lost. my team is/was better.

But with this. I can already tell his GK did a good job at stopping your shots. Furthermore, I'd say quality-wise, both teams were pretty much equal (1 quality difference is really irrelevant here). So the fact you were playing away didn't really help. But, that's only from what you just said.
I'll need the whole statistics to see in more details what happened, the subs you/your opponent made, or should have made, the formations (4-1-3W-2 vs 4-1-4-1 obviously) but seeing what players were placed where helps as well.

How was your morale/condition/win bonus before the match by the way ?

Morale and condition were pretty much full, win bonus at 150k
