It's about countering with what suites your team best. Minimise his threat and maximise your own threat.
What I mean by this is, if playing 4 defenders means leaving out one of your better players, try to counter him with the better player included.
What works for one may not work for all.
I wholeheartedly agree with this. At the end of the day, you just want to put as many good players on the field as you can. Formations do matter of course, but they shouldn't be a straitjacket. If playing 3-5-2 counters your opponent's formation, but you don't have, say, enough (skilled) midfielders to pull it off, you're better off settling for some kind of variant or another formation altogether.

Many will help where they can but come on, what do you really expect with so little info.
If you cannot counter it knowing both teams what do you expect others to do.
No offense but ......... give us a clue, the easiest way is just to post two screen shots your squad and his.

Agreed, always post screenshots, or at least tell team qualities.

My next opponent plays with a very offensive formation:
    dr---dc---dl
    ----dmc
    --mc-mc
    ---amc
    st-st-st (5 stars STs)

To counter it, i was thinking about a:
    dr-dc-dc-dl
    ----dmc
    ---mc-mc
    amr------aml
    ----st

normal, own half, no off, no counter.

What do you think about that? What type of passing should i use?

    The formation should be OK.
Hit him down Both flanks, you may be better going Defending/Hard defending if his strikers are much better than your DC's with Force Counter and red arrows on your AML/AMR. passing long, try to take advantage of his own DL/DR being out of position when he attacks, if his DL/DR are holding their positions, switch to mixed/short.

Difference between his STs and my defenders is about 20%. I didn't want to go defensive coz my midfielders are much better than his so i wanted to hold ball possession. Am i wrong?

No not at all, the problem being we don't know his tactics, if I see a stronger MF I will by pass it with with long balls from the back to my forwards where my strength is greatest.
In these sort of cases I prefer to start in a more reserved mentality, knowing I can hit him harder if I have to, you may prefer the reverse.
    It's down to the individual.

    Understood, ty for the support.

EDIT: I've done as i said, started with normal then scored and went defensive-counterattacking as u said. Scored 3-times again and won 4-1.
