    Well how I usually do these kind of works is like this : use your imagination, draw some quick sketches, make a list of elements you want to create and make some variations/combinations.
    Then you make the different kinds of shapes, symbols and patterns in an image editor such as Photoshop or something else. there you can use the different layers and have fun with creating your emblems, shirts etc.
